Introduction:
MSS 9630 is an RF coaxial cable with ferrite choke manufactured by Schwarzbeck, Germany, which is authorized to be sold and quoted as a service agent by Shenzhen EYT. The use of surface wave chokes on coaxial cables is a simple and effective way to improve reproducibility during practical EMC testing. Surface wave chokes can be used in locations where braided currents are generated, such as around the cable.
Principle:
When using RF coaxial cables with ferrite chokes such as the MSS9630, useful signals are propagated through the signal path in the inner core of the cable at low loss, while surface waves between the outer shield and the surrounding environment are attenuated by the inductance of the ferrite choke's magnetic ring.
Role:
Typical applications for this type of coaxial cable fitted with ferrite magnetic rings include:
- Field strength measurements, especially when using antennas with small electrical dimensions
- Antenna measurements using a balun with insufficient common mode rejection
- Conducted Nuisance Power Measurements Along Power Lines Using Power Absorption Clamps
Why use this coaxial cable with choke?
The main function of coaxial cables such as the MSS 9630 when wound with chokes is to increase the rejection ratio of surface waves on the outside of the cable. However, RF cables will change the attenuation of the cable itself because of the addition of chokes. If we install one, two or even three current chokes in series on a coaxial cable, you will get the attenuation graph shown below. As can be seen from the figure, the more the number of chokes, the cable will be in the high-frequency suppression and attenuation of more RF signals, but it can also be seen that each increase in the number of chokes, the attenuation only increased by 1dB or so, for the configuration of the preamplifier now RF test path, 1dB attenuation can be ignored; for the function of the suppression ratio, which is also more good than bad. So we can use this coaxial cable with choke to test EMI signals.

Installing a different number of chokes will result in variations in cable attenuation.
